LOPA Celebrates Louisiana OMV During Appreciation Month: Registration Matters at All Ages

Throughout September, the Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency (LOPA) recognizes the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) and its dedicated staff for helping Louisiana residents save and heal lives by providing the opportunity to register as organ, eye, and tissue donors.

During OMV Appreciation Month, LOPA underscores an important reminder: donor registration matters at all ages.

The opportunity to become an organ donor is rare. In fact, only about 1–2% of deaths result in organ donation because very specific medical circumstances must be present for donation to be possible. That makes every registered donor, and every conversation about donation, meaningful. Registration ensures that if the rare opportunity for organ donation does arise, a person’s wishes are known and their gift has the opportunity to help someone waiting for a lifesaving transplant.

At 81, George “Dobe” Clement, Jr., Gave Hope to a New Orleans Recipient

In July 2026, George “Dobe” Clement, Jr., became an organ donor at age 81. His selfless decision offered renewed hope to a 60-year-old New Orleans resident who had been waiting for more than two years for a kidney transplant.

Dobe’s story is a powerful reminder that age is not a barrier to giving the gift of life.

“Dobe is a perfect example of why registration matters at every age,” said Brett Gordon, LOPA President & CEO.

“His age did not diminish the impact he could make. At 81, Dobe gave a gift that changed the life of someone in his own community. We want Louisianans to understand that no matter their age, their decision to say “yes” can make a difference.”

Most Louisianans register as donors at their local OMV office while applying for or renewing a driver's license or state ID. LOPA remains grateful to OMV employees statewide who consistently make donor registration accessible to everyone.
