My brother Eldres was more than my brother. He was woven into the fabric of my heart, my family, and my life. His presence brought meaning to ordinary moments, and his love became part of who we are. Losing him to gun violence has left an emptiness that words can never fully hold. One moment, he was here with us; the next, our family was forced into a reality we never imagined. No family should ever have to endure the pain of losing someone they love in such a sudden and devastating way.
There are days when the loss feels impossible to accept. I think about his voice, his smile, the memories we shared, and all the moments we were supposed to have together. I think about the birthdays, holidays, conversations, and milestones he should still be here to experience. His life mattered. His dreams mattered. His future mattered. He deserved more time to live, grow, love, and create memories with the people who cherished him.
Yet even in the midst of this unbearable tragedy, Eldres left behind a gift of extraordinary love. Through organ donation, my brother became a lifesaver. Though his life was taken, he gave others the chance to continue theirs. Somewhere in this world, someone may have another birthday, another holiday, another family gathering, or another opportunity to watch their children grow because of Eldres. His final act gave hope where there had been fear and life where there had been uncertainty.
That is a legacy no one can ever take away from him.
It hurts to know that others are able to keep living while our family must learn how to live without him. We would give anything to have Eldres back—to hear his voice, see his face, hold him close, and share just one more moment. No gift can replace him. No words can erase the silence his absence has left behind. But knowing that he gave the gift of life to others brings a small light into a darkness our family never chose and never deserved.
My brother’s story did not end with the gunshot that took his life. His story continues in every life he helped save, in every family given more time together, and in every person who carries the gift he gave. His love, courage, and generosity are more powerful than the violence that ended his time with us.
Eldres will always be my brother. He will always be loved, remembered, and deeply missed. His life was so much more than the way it ended, and his name deserves to be remembered for the love he gave and the lives he helped save—not only for the tragedy that took him from us.
Rest peacefully, my brother Eldres. You were taken from us far too soon, and there will always be a place in our hearts that belongs only to you. Your final gift gave others another chance at life, and through them, a part of you continues to live. We carry the pain of losing you, but we also carry the pride of knowing that your generosity reached beyond your own life and brought hope to others.
Your life mattered. Your love mattered. Your life still matters. And your legacy will never die.
Forever our brother. Forever in our hearts. A life taken by violence, but a legacy that continues through the lives you saved.
