June 10th through the 15th, part of LOPA’s podcast team is on the road to record the accomplishments of Team Louisiana athletes for the Transplant Games of America. The Gifted Life Podcast is documenting the remarkable stories of triumph from those who have received the Gift of Life.
One of the podcast’s hosts, Lori Steele is in Cleveland, Ohio at the site of the Transplant Games of America to document these amazing stories. Recipients Keenen Shields, Barry Brown, Smith McCrae, Wendy Lipsey, Jamie Napolitano, Warren Whittington, Breanna Green and more are featured by The Gifted Life Podcast team, and more will be added throughout the remainder of the games.
The podcast was formed by LOPA in 2015 to further educate the public about organ, eye and tissue donation and encourage registration as a donor. Episodes of The Gifted Life Podcast are available on LOPA’s website, along with other podcast outlets such as iTunes and Google Play Music. A new episode of The Gifted Life, full of new and exciting information or interviews, releases every other Friday. LOPA, Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency, is Louisiana’s federally designated Organ Procurement Organization, or OPO. LOPA is tasked with recovering donor organs and tissue for transplantation, along with housing and maintaining Louisiana’s Donor Registry.
Currently, more than 123,000 individuals are awaiting an organ transplant in the United States. In Louisiana alone, more than 2,100 people are waiting. A single donor has the potential to save 9 lives, give 2 sight through cornea donation, and heal the lives of up to 50 people through tissue donation.
