Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations

Over the last few years, through its involvement in the Organ Donation Breakthrough Collaborative and the Organ Transplantation Breakthrough Collaborative, Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) has taken a leadership role in affecting change in hospitals related to organ and tissue donation.

The following list contains various statements or publications from JCAHO in support of organ and tissue donation activities within the nation's hospitals.

  • Revised Standard LD.3.110—The revised standard goes into effect January 1, 2007. It will be included in Update 2 to the 2006 Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Hospitals: The Official Handbook (CAMH), available September 2006. With the standard you will see the Rationale as well as the Elements of Performance.
  • Hospital Survey Activity Guide—This page, excerpted from the Guide, shows the hospital tiers, based on Conversion Rate (the number of actual donors divided by the number of patients meeting the definition of an eligible donor) and what the surveyors are most likely to do based on your hospital's Conversion Rate.
  • Healthcare at the Crossroads: Strategies for Narrowing the Organ Donation Gap and Protecting Patients—In 2004 JCAHO produced this white paper, discussing various strategies for improving donation rates in the nation's hospitals.
  • 10 Cs for Success—JCAHO identified the top 10 things hospitals should do to improve organ donation rates.
  • Narrowing the Organ Donation Gap: Making Organ Donation a Priority—On August 4, 2005, JCAHO Executive Vice President Chuck Mowll delivered this presentation to an audience of organ procurement organizations and the nation's largest donor hospitals.
